I don't stare much at the odometer. Occasionally my eyes my gaze down to make sure my speed is within the reasonable confines of the limit, not too fast to get my license suspended and not too slow that I'll be 'that guy' on the road. Speed was good and I was carelessly cruising down the highway with the windows rolled down and music generously filling the small space that is my Jeep Cherokee. This time however, I happen to notice something interested right below the trembling needle on my speedometer. The mileage read 151515. I gave one of those semi-silent "huh" that we all do when something is in between being interesting and something no one ever wants to hear about. "Look at that" I silently thought in my head and reached for my camera. "Surely I can't be the only lunatic that sees a pattern in numbers and finds it interesting", once again I pondered to myself.
Click! Although I took the photo with my cell phone, luckily it has a sound clip of a real camera snapping a picture so I can, with genuine authenticity, relay that sound to you for the sake of this story. It's the little things that help us forget that everything is automated. Thank you Mr. Engineer for reminding us what it was like in the yesteryear of yesterday, it is much appreciated.
So I take the picture and couldn't wait to share it. Like a ten year old showing off his new bike, I was talking about it like it was 1969 and we just landed on the moon. Things like "Isn't that crazy?" and "I couldn't believe I looked down right at that moment" were the kind of lunacy that was coming out of my mouth. Yet onward I went and delved deeper and deeper into the matter until even I lost interest.
What I did find out from others is that many of us have these quasi-mystical moments with numbers from time to time. License plates, supermarket receipts, airline flights and the list could go on and on, but they all provide one of these peculiar moments.
I'm not even going to get into whether they mean anything or if they have any significance to them at all. All I know is that like so many little things in life, perhaps we never realize that so many of us, just by sharing in our crazy humanity, experience similar things. Maybe they are not even things that we reflect on for too long, but there's a lot more that we have in common than not.
So I share with you my 151515.
Does it mean anything? Probably not.
But isn't that cool?
much numeric love
